The County of San Luis Obispo is hiring two Supervising Public Health Nurses (SPHN) to lead high-impact programs within the Maternal, Child Health (MCH) Division—improving outcomes for children and families while strengthening systems of care.
These roles offer the opportunity to lead in one of two areas:
• Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Coordination • Evidence-Based Home Visiting Programs
In these positions, you will guide multidisciplinary teams and programs that support children and families, either by advancing population health strategies or by leading intensive, relationship-based home visiting services.

About the Division
The Maternal Child Health (MCH) Division includes programs that support the health of pregnant individuals, children, youth, and families across San Luis Obispo County. Programs include Public Health Nursing, California Children’s Services, Health Care Program for Children in Foster Care, and Lead Poisoning Prevention, among others.
Together, these programs focus on prevention, care coordination, and improving access to services for populations with complex health and social needs.
Position Responsibilities
All Supervising Public Health Nurses in the MCH Division provide program leadership, supervision, and oversight. Responsibilities include:
• Planning, implementing, and evaluating programs • Supervising and supporting Public Health Nurses and support staff • Managing program operations, including caseloads, referrals, and documentation standards • Using data to guide decision-making and continuous quality improvement • Monitoring budgets and resource allocation • Partnering across programs and with community providers to improve coordination and access to services • Ensuring services are trauma-informed and aligned with best practices
Program Focus Areas
Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Coordination
In this role, you will: • Translate population health priorities into program strategies • Coordinate across programs and partners to strengthen systems of care • Guide efforts such as SIDS/SUID prevention and Child Death Review
Home Visiting Programs - Nurse-Family Partnership & CalWORKs Home Visiting These programs provide intensive, evidence-based home visiting services to support maternal and child health and family stability.
In this role, you will: • Oversee evidence-based home visiting programs and ensure model fidelity • Support staff delivering services in home and community settings • Monitor program performance and outcomes to improve service delivery
This position is a Limited Term, full-time position. Employees in limited term positions receive benefits equivalent to permanent full-time employees, therefore they will be eligible to earn vacation, sick leave, health, and pension benefits. The sunset date for this position is June 30, 2028.

Education and Experience A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Either A:Four years of experience as a Public Health Nurse Or B: Four years of increasingly responsible public health related experience, in a public or private healthcare setting.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid California License to practice as a Registered Nurse is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. A license in a probationary status is a disqualification. Possession of a valid California Public Health Nurse Certificate is required.
