Cornell University’s Department of Public & Ecosystem Health invites applications for a full-time Instructor and Program Manager for Applied Practice. This is a non-tenure-track academic staff appointment supporting Cornell Public Health, which delivers the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree training. This position will be the primary lead for the Applied Practice Experience (APEx) and career readiness initiative and perform program administration and student mentoring.
The Instructor and Program Manager has primary responsibility for coordination, implementation, and academic oversight of the APEx, a required component of the MPH curriculum. The position supports all MPH students as they plan, complete, and document applied public health projects aligned with program competencies and professional practice expectations. Responsibilities include advising and mentoring students throughout the APEx process; supporting development of workplans and applied outputs; evaluating student submissions using a competency-based portfolio approach; and facilitating communication among students, faculty advisors, and site supervisors.
The position also plays a central programmatic role in developing, managing, and sustaining partnerships with community, government, nonprofit, and organizational partners that support applied practice activities. The Instructor position collaborates with faculty and partners to identify and design feasible, high-impact project opportunities; manages partnership agreements in accordance with university processes; and maintains databases related to applied practice projects and outcomes.
In addition, the appointment includes responsibility for supporting MPH student career preparation and workforce engagement. This work includes developing familiarity with public health workforce trends and opportunities; collaborating with Cornell Career Services; organizing career panels, workshops, and related professional development activities; maintaining alumni connections; and tracking student employment outcomes. The position includes service to Cornell Public Health and the Department through participation on the MPH Curriculum Committee, collaboration with faculty on course-based applied practice opportunities, preparation of reports for program leadership, and support for funding and scholarship resources related to applied practice.
Required qualifications:
A professional degree in public health (MPH or DrPH) or a closely related field,
Demonstrated ability to manage partnerships and balance instructional, administrative, and programmatic responsibilities
Preferred qualifications include three years of relevant professional experience, and experience mentoring students in applied or community-engaged public health and/or academic settings.
Please note that this is a one-year term that is renewable up to a maximum of 5 years.
The position is based in Cornell University’s Ithaca campus and is a fully in-person role requiring frequent interaction with students, faculty, and community partners.
To apply: Visit https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/31923 and submit a cover letter, full CV, and contact information of three professional references. Applications will be reviewed as received, and the position will remain open until filled.
If you have any questions, please email the search committee at pehapex@cornell.edu.
Consistent with Cornell’s practice, appointment to academic positions requires candidates to disclose relevant information about their prior employment including whether they have been found to have violated institutional or employer policies related to or governing unlawful discrimination and harassment, academic and research misconduct, or financial misconduct.
Cornell University's Public and Ecosystem Health
Mission: Use a transdisciplinary, systems approach to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges that involve the inter-dependent health of people, animals, and the ecosystems on which all life depends.
Changing the World: Our department represents a bold new approach in academia. Rather than organize around a common discipline or approach, Public & Ecosystem Health brings public health professionals, biophysical and social scientists, and veterinarians together to address three of the world’s greatest challenges: achieving healthy food systems, tackling emerging health threats, and conserving biodiversity. We seek not only to understand these wicked problems through research, but also to address them directly through public health and clinical veterinary practice. Quite simply, our students, staff, and faculty seek to change the world.
Principles: Our department commits to the principles of sustainability, equity, and engagement. The complex problems we work on often arise from the unsustainable ways that people interact with the environment, and the inequitable ways that people interact with each other. For our research ...and practice to have an impact, we must engage with communities and partner with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and businesses. This approach also extends to how we train our students—whether pursuing an MPH, DVM, or PhD—so that they have the real-world skills needed to effect change throughout their careers.
