The Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides reference diagnostic and surveillance testing, and applied research activities for the detection, epidemiologic investigation, control and prevention of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by supervising scientific and information technology support staff; managing quality assurance and customer service programs; assisting the Biosafety Officer with development and implementation of biosafety procedures and managing the work of technical staff responsible for complex data analysis and bioinformatic projects for the Microbial Diseases Laboratory Branch (MDL) Branch.
The Research Scientist Supervisor (RSS) I will work closely with Branch, Division, and Center-level staff and leadership to develop, maintain, implement, and improve pre-analytic and post-analytic processes that are necessary for high quality public health laboratory testing for the diagnosis and epidemiologic investigation, and surveillance of a range of microbial diseases of public health importance in the State of California. This position may be delegated Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) General Supervisor duties, if candidate is qualified.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience and knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA) regulatory requirements for high complexity testing, education and training.
Experience implementing and managing quality control and quality assurance systems in a regulatory or clinical laboratory testing environment.
Experience using and developing Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) assays and reports, document control systems, and using various software to analyze and compare data, including sequence data.
Experience working in a clinical or public health laboratory performing high complexity work in the field of microbiology (specifically bacteriology), including method development and validation.
California Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Certification is desirable
