The Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is based on the Richmond Campus which employs more than 1,200 people. The Richmond Campus is a flat, 29-acre property located in Richmond's Marina Bay. The CLS serves to protect and promote the health of all Californians through innovative and collaborative infectious disease and environmental testing, including provision of investigation and surveillance activities which form the basis of disease response and prevention. The CLS works to bring together emerging scientific capabilities in testing, analytics, and communications reflecting a new level of coordination, support, and leadership for the public health laboratory system at the state, local and national level. In addition, the Center relies on a continuous improvement infrastructure as a core value in developing solutions that emphasize a culture of quality and performance through performance management success.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by acting as a technical expert for the Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Training program.
The Public Health Microbiologist Specialist (PHMS) serves as subject matter expert (SME) to staff that provide didactic and laboratory training in bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and virology to PHM trainees throughout California. This position works closely with public health laboratory directors, participating CDPH training laboratories, and training partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), and the California Association of Public Health Laboratory Directors (CAPHLD) Training Committee to update training curriculum, provide subject matter expertise on PHM training and laboratory safety, coordinate and implement training plans and activities, update individual module’s schedule, provide lab training, develop online training platforms, and update training resources. The incumbent coordinates with the Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS) and the PHM Training Program & Laboratory Animal Services Section (PHMTP&LASS) to update and enforce necessary risk assessments, health and safety policies and procedures; report and resolve health and safety issues and concerns; and support emergency response procedures in the PHM training areas. This position works with PHMTP&LASS and CAPHLD to update and maintain inventory of training lab media, reagents, and supplies and helps ensure timely delivery, following the training schedule.
The LabAspire PHM Training Program Coordinator performs essential job functions under the direction of the LabAspire Research Scientist Supervisor I and the California Department of Public Health. The LabAspire program is a state-wide public health laboratory (PHL) workforce development program with the mission to sustain the California PHL network by training enough qualified personnel to meet federal and state regulatory requirements for certified Public Health Laboratory Directors and certified PHM in leadership roles.
In addition to carrying out LabAspire related duties, the LabAspire PHM Training Program Coordinator assists the PHM Training Program an average of 15-20 hours per week during the six-month PHM Training Program. The number of hours may vary based on the amount of work performed during a particular week as well as availability.

Must have a Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) license. PHM Trainee license not acceptable.
Good communication and writing skills

Public Health Microbiologist Training Program experience is a plus
