The CDPH Environmental Health Laboratory Branch (EHLB) provides technical expertise and new measurement methods for air quality and biochemical speciation to identify emerging environmental pollutants and promote the health of all Californians. EHLB has a multidisciplinary staff of 30 experts in chemistry, toxicology, aerosol science, ventilation, engineering, and epidemiology. The EHLB Biochemistry Section conducts environmental testing for lead-poisoned children; biomonitoring of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and chemical metabolites; emerging contaminants identification; and intervention studies. The EHLB Air Quality Section provides measurements and technical guidance on indoor air pollutants, including control measures and infectious aerosols; emerging product emissions; community air monitoring; and emergency chemical exposures including wildfire smoke.
New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range, as applicable.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by strengthening the state environmental public health program and emergency preparedness as related to indoor air quality (IAQ) and/or outdoor air quality (OAQ) events.
The incumbent works under the general supervision of Research Scientist Supervisor I, the Emergency Preparedness Unit Chief, in the Air Quality Section (AQS) of EHLB. The Research Scientist (RS) II (Physical/Engineering Sciences) provides inputs and technical expertise to plan, organize, and carry out scientific research studies and/or policy projects related to air quality and harmful airborne pollutants and pathogens, as mandated under Health and Safety Code §425, §105400 et seq. This RS II also serves as a technical scientific consultant to other scientists and officials within CDPH and other state, federal, and local agencies as related to ventilation, air quality and control of airborne infectious aerosols.
