A Lactation Technician provides breastfeeding support and counseling to breastfeeding mothers in Women, Infants and Children (WIC) clinics and local hospitals. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive supervision from a Registered Dietician. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a clinic or hospital setting. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
EDUCATION: Have an associate degree from an accredited college or university.
AND EXPERIENCE: Have two years of experience providing breastfeeding instructions to mothers and their infants in clinics or hospitals.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Current certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners. Employees must maintain current certification as an IBCLC for continued employment or failure to do so will result in termination of employment. Copy of applicant’s current certification must accompany application.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the current principles, techniques and practices of breastfeeding counseling, and lactation support.
Knowledge of dietary and lifestyle changes that addresses the nutritional needs of nursing mothers and breastfeeding infants.
Skill in breastfeeding clinical instruction and counseling.
Skill in interviewing techniques.
Ability to monitor and evaluate breastfeeding mothers.
