What You Will Do:
As the Employee Engagement and Wellness Manager, you will lead a team committed to enhancing the overall employee experience at DOH. Your role will be to develop and deliver inclusive and inspiring activities and events that foster connection, engagement, recognition, and wellness among our employees and that align with our agency’s mission and values. You’ll identify gaps in our current practices, design strategies to address them, and implement new initiatives that respond to employee and leader needs to create a positive and thriving experience for all employees.
The ideal candidate for the Employee Engagement and Wellness Manager position is a passionate advocate for positive workplace culture characterized by meaningful connection and holistic wellness with extensive experience in employee engagement, organizational development, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives. They are skilled in leading complex projects that enhance workplace culture and employee satisfaction using targeted universalism approaches (e.g., setting universal goals and ensuring that processes are co-created by and meet the needs of all employees with careful attention to varying needs based on identity, and special focus on any underrepresented and/or marginalized group). This individual is data-driven, results-oriented, and capable of using metrics to continuously refine strategies. With exceptional communication skills and a collaborative mindset, they can inspire and engage employees at all levels, whether that be coaching executive leaders, delivering agency-wide workshops, humbly soliciting feedback from staff, facilitating project meetings, etc. A commitment to public service, innovation, equity, and engagement, and a passion for contributing to the health and wellness of Washington State’s workforce are essential.

Desired Qualifications:
We welcome experience gained through professional employment, volunteer work, or lived experiences. We value diverse perspectives and encourage you to highlight all relevant experiences.
Option 1: Four (4) or more years of experience designing and leading programs in employee engagement, organizational development, or human resources, with a focus on wellness and diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and recognition initiatives.
Option 2: Six (6) or more years of experience creating and planning events, workshops, or activities that enhance participants' sense of accomplishment, connection, or learning. This includes experience in:
Tailoring Events: Addressing participants' interests and needs and fostering an inclusive environment.
Feedback Utilization: Collecting and using participant feedback to improve future events.
Content Alignment: Ensuring events align with the organization’s mission and strategic goals.
Demonstrating Value: Showing how events contribute to organizational goals like employee engagement and professional development.
Option 3: A bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, community health, social work, health communication, public administration, business administration, or a related field; AND:
Two (2) or more years of experience meeting the expectations under Option 1, OR
Four (4) or more years of experience meeting the expectations under Option 2.
In addition to meeting one of the above options, demonstrated experience in the following:
Leading and managing multiple, complex projects simultaneously with multiple invested partners.
Experience in gathering and using data to drive decision-making and strategy development.
Applying Design Thinking methodologies to create engagement initiatives, events, and workshops
Developing and using metrics to measure and improve project or event outcomes.
Use of Targeted Universalism and Systems Thinking to address root causes and co-create solutions impacting global goals and systemic inequities.
Foster Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Well-Being: Exemplifies cultural humility by creating a psychologically and physically safe workplace that honors diverse cultural backgrounds and intersecting identities.
Effective communication - knows how to convey ideas effectively and respectfully to diverse groups and understands how to adapt that knowledge to a variety of contexts.
Oversee Team Health and Productivity: Links the broader mission and goals to daily actions, fostering alignment, commitment, and the development of supportive structures to enhance motivation and productivity.
Model Self-Awareness and Integrity: Exhibits deep self-awareness and ethical behavior, serving as a role model for authenticity, transparency, and ongoing self-reflection.
