Purpose of Position: The primary purpose of the Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) is to intervene in and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted communicable diseases: syphilis, HIV and AIDS; identify, to inform, counsel, and interview patients diagnosed with syphilis, HIV, and AIDS and initiate referrals to medical and/or psychosocial services; notify and counsel sexual and needle-sharing partners who have been exposed to syphilis, and/or HIV and make provisions for counseling, testing, and appropriate treatment; investigate and consult on violations of syphilis and HIV disease control measures; participate in investigations, controls, and outreach activities for all other communicable diseases.
