The NCSLPH Environmental Sciences laboratories offer comprehensive analysis of drinking water and other environmental samples through microbiological, inorganic, organic and radiochemical testing. This position will perform routine analyses of drinking water samples for pesticides, herbicides, volatiles, and other organic contaminants following EPA 500 level methods. Techniques used for analyzing samples include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, purge and trap, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), and Mass Spectrometry (MS). This position is expected to follow NCSLPH Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on instrumentation used in the laboratory. In addition, the Chemist I will be expected to serve as back-up to the other chemists and chemistry technicians in this laboratory.

Experience working in an organic chemistry laboratory.
Experience with laboratory safety practices and procedures used to mitigate the risks associated with using hazardous chemicals.
Experience with Gas Chromatography (GC) or High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) instruments.
Experience with environmental testing, either waste water, drinking water, air and/or soil.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perceive colors normally and any eyesight deficiencies must be correctable.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
