Job Responsibilities:
The Active Surveillance Data Collection Officer position supports the surveillance activities of the Georgia Emerging Infections Program (GA-EIP). The GA-EIP is a collaborative project with the Georgia Department of Health (DPH), Emory, and, CDC that conducts active surveillance and initiates research studies related to foodborne and invasive bacterial pathogens and other emerging infectious diseases. The duties performed by this position are critical in improving the completeness and data quality of Georgia's notifiable disease surveillance and also aid in the detection, investigation, and control of food- and waterborne disease outbreaks in Georgia.
Contacting clinical laboratories to assure complete accurate reporting of conditions under GA-EIP surveillance, including FoodNet and Active Bacterial Core (ABC) organisms.
Gathering and verifying demographic, laboratory, clinical, and exposure information on all cases of infection involving organisms under active surveillance.
Ensuring that active surveillance data are immediately and accurately entered into the State Electronic Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (SENDSS).
Ensuring appropriate epidemiologists are notified of immediately reportable conditions, outbreaks, and potential public health emergencies.
Conducting semiannual audits of cases reported by clinical laboratories.
Visiting clinical laboratories and hospitals to improve and maintain reporting and isolate submission.
Serving as liaison with laboratory staff and infection control practitioners.
Assisting in physician and laboratory surveys, special studies, and outbreak investigations.
Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of experience performing work related to area of assignment OR Six years of experience performing work related to area of assignment.
