This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities. As an employee of the Local Services Branch, the incumbent serves as part of a team that provides monitoring, training, support for and collaboration with regional local agencies that serve Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program participants.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief, Training Services Unit, Staff Services Manager I (SSM I). The Health Program Specialist I (HPS I) leads and coordinates the efforts related to development, implementation, and monitoring of the WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) training and certification program. Assures new local agency staff are trained to provide nutrition, education, and breastfeeding support for the WIC participants. Activities include monitoring WNA training and local agency staff certification. The HPS I travels statewide up to 10% of the time providing technical assistance and monitoring staff training at local agency sites.
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
1. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment 2. Ability to communicate effectively with staff at various levels, external agencies and the general public 3. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills including reviewing and editing documents. 4. License/Certification: Possession of a valid certification of registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association
Experience In: 1. Training adults in various modalities: instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (VILT), and eLearning computer-based training (CBT). 2. Designing, developing, and evaluating training programs. 3. Using Microsoft 365, Articulate 360, and learning management systems (LMS). 4. Managing, prioritizing, and meeting multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
Knowledge Of: 1. Adult learning theories. 2. Instructional Design Models (e.g. ADDIE). 3. State and federal policies and regulations related to the WIC Program. 4. WIC Nutrition Assistant training and certification program.
