The incumbent works under the administrative direction of the Center for Infectious Diseases (CID) Deputy Director. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by serving as the CID Assistant Deputy Director (ADD) responsible for overseeing the Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC); Office of Policy and Guidance (OPG); and the COVID-19 Clinical Outbreaks, Modeling, Policy, Academics, Surveillance & Science (COMPASS) Branch. The PHMA II also serves as the Deputy State Epidemiologist.
The PHMA II is responsible for providing leadership, scientific and medical guidance, performance accountability and general oversight of the state’s major infectious disease programs, with an additional focus on leading the state’s mitigation and policy interventions in response to COVID-19.
