Position description The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego (hwsph.ucsd.edu) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and invites applications for up to two Associate or Full Professor rank faculty positions in Health Equity with a research focus on African American communities and the Black Diaspora.
UC San Diego is forging a new paradigm for engagement and collaboration between STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences and the Social Sciences/Arts & Humanities. These faculty positions are 2 of 13 Ladder Rank faculty positions that unite STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences departments and schools and African American and the Black Diaspora Studies through innovative research, coordinated teaching, and targeted service. Faculty will have multiple opportunities to engage with scholars across UC San Diego disciplines to address issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social and political influences focused on STEM/Public Health/Health Sciences, while also working within their home department / school and professional communities.
Faculty holding these positions will be expected to design and teach an undergraduate course that aligns with the African American Studies Minor (AASM), e.g., an appropriate Health Equity course. They may also demonstrate the equivalent through service to the AASM and by mentoring undergraduate students. We seek candidates who will conduct research advancing health for African American communities and the Black Diaspora. We welcome candidates whose professional experiences and personal backgrounds have facilitated their understandings of traditionally underrepresented racial minority communities. Faculty are expected to have an inclusive stance on mentoring and advising that incorporates working with women and underrepresented racial minority undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty will be encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary conversations and scholarship across UC San Diego disciplines.
The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health has focal areas of Behavioral Medicine, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, Health Equity, Public Mental Health, and Climate and Environmental Health and offers teaching and student mentoring opportunities in our BSPH, MPH, PhD in Public Health (administered jointly with San Diego State University), and MS and PhD in Biostatistics degree programs. Further, the School has an MAS in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UCSD Extension and a Preventive Medicine Residency program. The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on Health Promotion and Equity, Women's Health, Tobacco Control, and Wireless and Population Health Systems and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School. The School houses five recharge cores providing services to both UCSD and the external community, and the School's faculty and academics hold ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts.
Candidates are required to show a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity by submitting a Diversity Statement of past contributions and/or future plans of excellence in this area as part of their application for an academic appointment.
Appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor rank based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. Series will be 1.0 FTE Ladder Rank (Tenured). Appointment may require candidates to be partially self-funded, e.g., with grants.
