UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full time (100% FTE, 40 hours per week), variable shift RESEARCH NURSE SUPERVISOR. The Research Nurse Supervisor (RNS) will play a critical role in the study of COVID-19 transmission rates. The Research Nurse Supervisor will oversee a team of 3 Research Nurses, who will obtain COVID-related data from over 7,000 participants across the State of Washington.

The Research Nurse Supervisor (RNS) will serve in the Virology Division of Laboratory Medicine for statewide longitudinal SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virologic and serologic surveys for Washington done in partnership with state and county-level public health authorities. We are actively collaborating with other groups to perform analysis of immunity, host and viral factors.

The RNS will be supervised by the Research Coordinator (RC) and assist in supervising nurses, para-medical personnel, and other survey collaborators. They will coordinate and supervise the performance of epidemiological, community-oriented research and serve as the survey’s focal person in Central and Eastern Washington. With delegated authority, the RNS will interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action. The RNS will supervise and manage Registered Nurse - Research personnel and/or para-medical personnel and coordinate the development and implementation of epidemiological research programs such as a household-based survey. They may also assist in the analysis and interpretation of research results. As a research nurse, this position will assess participant eligibility according to protocol, collect, prepare, and transport nasopharyngeal and blood specimens, and provide qualitative survey data collection. Specimen and data collection will include approaching and interviewing participants in local communities and designated survey sites. Data collection, specimen transport, survey monitoring and supervision will require the RNS to travel extensively within and between counties.

SCHEDULE
The Research Nurse Supervisor will work 40 hours per week for a fixed-duration research assignment, anticipated to run for 6-8 months. The Research Nurse Supervisor will regularly travel throughout Pierce County.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with the RC and principal investigator (PI) to establish, write, and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) and research protocol for field data collection, specimen storage and transport, and return of results
  • Develop and facilitate trainings for survey staff and external collaborators on data and specimen collection and specimen transport
  • Consult with and engage external collaborators, such as community and local health department leaders to implement the survey
  • Direct and manage the work of Research Nurses and support staff such as phlebotomists, clerical support personnel, scheduling assistants, laboratory couriers, and other external collaborators to achieve research objectives
  • Work and manage personnel in diverse environments (e.g. households, mobile vehicles, pop-up sites) including extensive travel to survey sites – navigating using GPS and address information
  • Supervise all aspects of data collection to ensure quality control of data and adherence to ethical and safety guidelines of survey staff and external collaborators, including but not limited to, correctly donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring sterile specimen collection
  • Monitor adherence to research protocol to enroll and assess eligibility of survey participants; obtain informed consent;
  • Describe and clarify research protocol to participants; answer participant, community, and external collaborator questions regarding the research; schedule subject participation and specimen collection
  • Manage hiring, corrective action, performance management, time keeping, and other supervisory duties
  • Perform specialized tasks such as venipuncture, nasopharyngeal swabs and operation of electronic monitoring equipment; coordinate, process, and transport laboratory specimens as required; 
  • Identify, establish, coordinate, and provide appropriate public health education materials and referral procedures for participants
  • Perform duties of Registered Nurse 2 –- Research
  • Utilize electronic devices such as tablets to interview participants and input data; perform data quality monitoring and control using electronic devices such as laptops
  • Perform mathematical and statistical calculations and/or analysis to summarize data for stakeholders and external collaborators alongside the RC and PI
  • Prepare, create and update research reports, present via zoom or in-person interim findings as needed
  • Help prepare and monitor research budgets
  • Travel to and from multiple survey sites and other locations employed for survey logistics and management

    REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or a relevant field AND three years of experience as a registered nurse, including one year experience at the Registered Nurse 2 - Research level
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Washington
  • Valid driver’s license

    DESIRED
  • Language skills, especially fluency in Spanish
  • Experience interviewing and collecting specimens outside of a clinic environment
  • Research experience involving families and pediatric populations
  • Experience collecting specimens from pediatric populations
  • Experience working with diverse populations and settings
  • Ability to create, maintain, and produce timely reports on research progress and survey completion
  • Able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Supervisory experience
  • Resourceful in addressing challenges in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Professional and active communication skills in-person, via email, and over the telephone
  • Public health education experience

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • It will be necessary to work in other departmental and field locations in order to meet patient service requirements
  • Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather
  • Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis
  • Travel estimated 75%
  • Work different shifts to attain adequate response rates for the survey, including afternoons, evenings and weekend work
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for travel to and from sites, transport of survey personnel, and transport specimens for processing and delivery to courier.
  • Work outdoors in different seasons in hot and cold environments
  • Regular teleconference work and possible travel required to Seattle for meetings with research leadership team and collaborators
