| Position Summary: This position is on site at our Cullowhee campus. Western Carolina University (WCU), a regional comprehensive university targeted for enrollment growth as part of the University of North Carolina, and currently serves approximately 11,000+ students. The University seeks to hire an outstanding professional to provide an array of health and wellness education to the campus. Western Carolina University is located in Cullowhee, N.C. in a scenic valley between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains, providing convenient access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the urban centers of Atlanta, Asheville, Greenville/Spartanburg and Knoxville. DESCRIPTION: Full time 12-month position. The Assistant Director for Health & Wellness Education works within the Division of Student Affairs reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health & Wellness. The health & wellness unit consists of Campus Recreation & Wellness, Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Services, and Health & Wellness Education for the promotion of overall wellness encouraging students to be informed, involved, healthy, and well. The Assistant Director serves as the university designated coordinator of alcohol and other drug education responsible for overseeing all action and programs relating to, WCU Policy #38. The Assistant Director will conduct biennial reviews on the effectiveness of alcohol and other drug programs, and maintain biennial review materials on file in compliance with the Education Department General Administrative Regulations, Part 86.103 (a). Responsibilities include oversight, development, coordination, and delivery of prevention programming/campaigns in the campus community. Ensuring that prevention and intervention efforts are driven by evidence-based practice and current research, the assistant director is responsible for creating and implementing health education programs, alcohol and drug awareness education (University Policy #38), outreach efforts, events and/or workshops to promote holistic well-being and the academic growth of students. This position collaborates with various student affairs departments, as well as, other campus partners, as appropriate to ensure campus-wide engagement in prevention and intervention efforts. Primary duties of the Assistant Director for Health & Wellness Education are as follows:
Serve as the university designated coordinator of alcohol and other drug education (as per Policy #38)
Chair the Alcohol and Other Drug Committee (AODC) to facilitate consistent educational messaging, and coordinates the university biennial and drug and alcohol prevention program (DAAPP) annual report.
Supervise the Catamount Wellness Ambassadors, develop an assessment plan for programming /presentations.
Develop communications, branding and marketing for Health Education & Wellness initiatives, includes management of on-line wellbeing portals, health & wellness blog, and other social media platforms.
Additional programming on campus and in the residence halls, as determined by need, may include, but not limited to: Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention and Education, Cold & Flu Prevention, Nutrition, Healthy Relationships, Sexual Health, Sexual Assault, Sleep Hygiene, and Stress Reduction.
Serve as the Health & Wellness Unit point of contact, coordinator, and lead presenter for overall wellness presentations for academic transition courses.Minimum Qualifications: Successful candidates for the position will have earned a Masters degree in Higher Education for Student Affairs Professionals, Counseling, Public Health, Health Education, Wellness or another closely related field. Preferred Qualifications: Prefer at least two-years relevant experience in health and wellness education working in the university setting with students, faculty, and staff. Other desirable qualities, include leadership experiences, understanding programming for large and small groups, presentation skills, ability to effectively communicate with all university constituents on and off campus, understanding the needs of a diverse student population, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, familiarity with a variety of technology, computer/software applications, assessment, grant and report writing, certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and possesses high energy and enthusiasm for this work.
