Job Description: The Assistant Director, Career Counseling (Graduate Students) provides direct career counseling support, plans and executes career-related workshops, and assists in developing new career resources, employer connections, and alumni connections for Brown graduate (masters and doctoral) students. The incumbent plans and implements collaborative initiatives with campus colleagues (faculty, staff, graduate students) to support career and professional development for Brown graduate students. The incumbent prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in the planning and execution of the positionâ™s responsibilities. The incumbent represents the vision, mission and goals of CareerLAB. Responsibilities Career Counseling with Brown Masters and PhD Students - Provide individual counseling services primarily for graduate (masters and doctoral) students. Utilize current theory, best practices, technology, and resources for career advising. Counseling efforts should be coordinated with and supportive of other campus career advising initiatives for graduate students (including at the School of Professional Studies, the Watson Institute, the School of Public Health, and the Graduate School). As a member of the Career Education team at CareerLAB, meet frequently with other counselors to discuss the counseling needs of both graduate and undergraduate students. Assist, when possible, with undergraduate career counseling activities.
- Career counseling should support student development aligned with CareerLABâ™s learning outcomes which include: an understanding of personal needs, interests, values, skills, and strengths; the ability to articulate a personal and professional narrative; a knowledge of how to explore career interests, find opportunities, and make professional connections; and understanding of how to utilize CareerLAB resources and other important tools in the career planning process.
Plan and execute career-related programs and workshops for Brown graduate students - Develop and present skill-building workshops related to the career development process for graduate students. Cultivate relationships within the Graduate School and with graduate student groups, academic departments, campus centers, and other University offices to assess career-related needs for Brown graduate students and to develop programs that address these needs. Execute programs related to student self-assessment, career research and exploration, and job search resources and skills. Conduct outreach to the diverse population of Brown graduate students and market CareerLABâ™s graduate student initiatives.
- Graduate student workshops are consistently executed in alignment with CareerLABâ™s mission, values, and learning outcomes. Programs are planned with an emphasis on inclusivity and the recognition of the diversity of the Brown graduate student community. The quality and effectiveness of all programming is continually assessed and evaluated. Graduate students view CareerLAB as a valuable resource at Brown that they seek to engage with.
Assist in developing career resources, employer connections, and alumni connections for Brown graduate students - Assess and research best practices for providing career resources for graduate students (these may include career-related databases, training modules, information guides, models of service delivery, etc.). Work with the CareerLAB Recruiting team to develop employer relationships and employment opportunities specifically for graduate students (with a focus on non-academic opportunities). Support CareerLAB efforts to better identify employers who truly value diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of their recruiting process. Work with the CareerLAB BrownConnect team to cultivate alumni networks and engage individual alumni in efforts to support Brown graduate students. Reach out to colleagues at other institutions (particularly in the Ivy+ consortium) to discuss best practices and partner on initiatives that will benefit Brownâ™s graduate students.
- Closely track graduate student usage of career resources and the ongoing utility of specific resources. Develop a strong understanding of graduate student career-interests by academic area and prioritize employer and alumni outreach accordingly. Work with campus partners, including the Office of Institutional Research and the Graduate School, to track graduate student career outcomes and devise both internal and external reporting mechanisms. Ensure that career resources, employer connections, and alumni connections for graduate students are inclusive and representative of diversity within the graduate student community. Ensure that graduate students feel prepared and supported in creating their post-Brown plans.
Qualifications Bachelorâ™s degree and 2- 3 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred. Experience advising students in a higher education environment; ability to adjust advising approaches to diverse student styles and needs. Demonstrated ability to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in executing job responsibilities. Understanding of the graduate student experience and the different career advising needs and timelines for Masters and PhD students. Understanding of the unique challenges that many historically underrepresented students, students of color, first-generation and low-income students, LGBTQ+ students, and international students will face during the career planning and exploration process. Advanced understanding of and ability to articulate and advance Brownâ™s educational philosophy, culture, curriculum, and approach to advising; interest in and ability to engage, collaborate with, educate, and support students in translating their Brown experience into lives of meaning and purpose; and ability to collaborate with faculty on integrating work with curricular goals. Professional networking knowledge and understanding of and experience with organizational recruiting and talent development (for profit and nonprofit); knowledge of specific clusters of industries. Ability to build relationships leading to engagement of alumni and employers with Brown, students, and faculty. Ability to develop and execute relevant programs for students, faculty, alumni, employers, and other constituencies. Collaborative work style; strong team player; open-mindedness, inclusiveness and flexibility; ability to work and build collaborations with diverse communities. Comfort using data and assessment tools to measure the effectiveness of career support for graduate students and graduate student career outcomes. Attention to detail; excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to support occasional evening and weekend events/ programs. Willingness to take on challenges and display a growth mindset even if a candidate does not yet meet every qualification on this list.
