Harborview Medical Center has an outstanding opportunity for part-time (80% FTE / 32 hours/week), evening shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 1. At a semi-technical level, perform simple laboratory collection associated with venipunctures and capillary blood collection from patients, testing and/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing and performs other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sort and prioritize initial specimens and requests, receive specimens via pneumatic tube system and at the front window
Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection
Verify patient identity before performing collection
Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages
Match specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type
Centrifuge and aliquot appropriate specimen type and quantity as ordered
Process timed urine collections: add preservatives, measure, aliquot, etc.
Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees
Refer testing to other laboratories as procedurally necessary
Maintain complete, accurate, and legible records
Clean work area at least once each shift
Answer telephones, intercom and window reception in a courteous and professional manner
Perform computer functions required for completion of tasks: data entry of patient information and tests requested, printing, worksheets, reports, and result inquiry
Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis
Resolve specimen or order-related problems
Attend division and department staff meetings
Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments
Complete compliance, safety and other training relevant to job functions as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience
OR
Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS
Completion of a phlebotomy course
Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health
DESIRED
Associates or Bachelor degree in science.
Experience in major medical hospital laboratory.
Experience with laboratory information system.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees working in Laboratory Medicine may be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt etc.
Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such are required to report to work during inclement weather
