School Nurse

Friends Community School (FCS) is a progressive co-ed Quaker K-8 day school serving a diverse student body from the greater Washington, D.C. area. The School Nurse is a full-time position. The nurse is  responsible for health services at FCS, and provides acute, chronic, episodic, and emergency health care to students, and emergency care for staff. In addition to promoting health-related habits, the nurse is responsible for ensuring FCS is in compliance with national and local health policies. Reporting directly to the Director of Finance, the nurse monitors metrics for COVID-19 in Prince George’s County (PGC), educates the school community and the Board of Trustees about research and metrics related to the virus and other communicable diseases.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain nursing license and First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
• Communicates with the Prince George’s Health Department and follows its directions for addressing and communicating information related to COVID-19 and its spread within the school community.
• Collaborate with administrators/staff as needed, to ensure student safety and well-being. 
• Oversees pool testing and arranges PCR testing with local pediatric practice for the students and staff. 
• Assist with health screening, and provide evaluation of symptoms, isolation, and collaboration with the PGC department of health as needed, per public health guidelines and the Maryland Communicable Disease Summary.
• Assess the student population and determine responsibilities as necessary.  Review students’ current health profiles, including all prescription and non-prescription medications, ensuring that reviews are completed in time for school-opening, and individual parent meetings are held, if needed, for students with particular medical circumstances.
• Follow action plans and medical management plans that have been developed by the physician or health-care provider (as provided).
• Contact doctors and health care providers as needed. Take verbal orders from a doctor and do the follow-up paperwork if required.
• Communicate with parents regarding student visits to the health room.
• Become proficient in use of the School’s medical records system and maintain required records.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA requirements regarding confidentiality of medical records and information.
• Maintain proper storage and security of medications and medical/health records.
• Conduct In-Service training for faculty and staff for medical/health-related issues, and training of particular staff as needed to support children with specific healthcare needs.
• Provide health education for students as needed for prevention of illness and management of chronic conditions.
• Prepare first-aid kits, medications and health paperwork, and train faculty and staff for field trips.  The School will notify the nursing staff in advance of field trips.
• Be available on-call to answer questions and provide assistance to administration on school and summer camp days, during school trips, or for emergency situations.  Provide cell and home phone numbers.
• Help develop the School’s policies concerning medical/health issues, safety, emergency response and disaster-preparedness.
• Provide support and advice for parents, care providers and school staff on childhood illnesses and the management and control of infection and communicable diseases.
• Maintain adequate inventory of health-related supplies.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Other duties, as needed.

This is a year-round position, although summer duties may allow a more relaxed schedule.

The RN must submit a copy of a current license to the School.  

The School will carry nurse’s malpractice insurance.
