The School of Sociology at the University of Arizona invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice career-track position to teach and provide administrative leadership in our interdisciplinary Care, Health & Society (CHS) program beginning July 1, 2021. The CHS program offers an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degree that provides undergraduates with education, training, and applied experiences in the healthcare industry and related helping professions.

The responsibilities of this fiscal year (12 month) position include: teaching courses on health, health professions, and healthcare; providing administrative leadership and bringing innovative energy to CHS; promoting student success; and providing and expanding opportunities for professional training that will help students prepare for careers in the health professions. This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure. Applications received by March 19, 2021, will be fully considered. We will accept applications until the position is filled.

Duties & Responsibilities

Instruction involves teaching a 3/3 course load in the academic year (Fall/Spring) and some summer instruction. Courses to be taught include CHS 202 Society and Health, CHS 204 The Health Professions, and CHS 306 Interprofessional Collaborative Care. Additional courses can be developed based around the expertise of the successful candidate. Instruction modalities include both in-person and online courses. Other non-traditional classroom teaching duties may include coordination of CHS 411 Career and Professionalization Seminar (1 credit), CHS 394 Independent Study or Preceptorship, and the CHS 393 Internship.

Service and Outreach includes providing vision and programmatic leadership for CHS’s continued growth and development. This includes:

• Promoting the program on and off campus
• Innovating the CHS curriculum, keeping it current and in line with the healthcare industry’s trends and employers’ needs.
• Providing mentorship and guidance for CHS students seeking careers in the healthcare and helping professions.
• Working with university and college efforts to recruit students to the CHS program and promote the opportunities, events, and accomplishments of our students and faculty.
• Developing annual course schedules in collaboration with Director of Undergraduate Studies, School Manager, and School Director.
• Working closely with all CHS instructors, including T/TT faculty, CT faculty, adjunct instructors, and Sociology PhD students.
• Working with regional healthcare employers to identify opportunities for collaborations such as internship placements, service-learning opportunities, and professionalization seminars.
• Recruiting adjunct lecturers for CHS courses when needed.

Additional responsibilities in summer include time for research including participation in professional opportunities available at the University of Arizona or through regional, state, national or international opportunities as warranted.
