The Department of Medicine’s Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (AID) was recently awarded a three-year cooperative agreement award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a national monitoring and evaluation system for SSPs (Component 2 of CDC-RFA-PS19-1909, https://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/funding/announcements/ps19-1909/index.html). The goals of this project are to: 1) improve, collect, and analyze available national data on SSP activities and impact; and 2) improve the ability of SSPs to self-conduct M&E activities and improve their capacity to monitor, support, and sustain their program needs. AID is hiring for a Temporary Research Interviewer to provide support to a national surveillance initiative of people who inject drugs accessing syringe service programs across the USA. Specifically, this position will conduct one-on-one structured interviews using a remote platform for the Needle Exchange Utilization Survey (NEXUS). Findings from this project may impact the University by generating new knowledge about PWID and other drug using populations for further investigation and intervention development The Research Interviewer will be responsible for administering a cross-sectional survey which includes sensitive questions about health behaviors to members of vulnerable populations using a secure remote platform (e.g., Zoom). This position has two key responsibilities: 1) working with vulnerable and drug-using populations and 2) strict adherence to data collection and entry protocols. The Research Interviewer will be expected to work with a diverse group of people with a non-judgmental manner. In addition to interview protocols, the research interviewer will need to follow strict data collection protocols to ensure high data quality. Research Interviewers will also be responsible for attending interview trainings and team meetings. Position Background: Syringe service programs (SSP) are an evidence-based intervention for reducing HIV risk among people who inject drugs (PWID) and are an entry point for PWID to access treatment for substance use disorders, other medical care, and social work services. In the wake of the current opioid epidemic and resurgence of methamphetamine use, SSPs are increasingly recognized as one of the key places to reach PWID for preventive services. There is currently no coordinated system for monitoring and evaluating SSPs in the United States, and many SSPs do not have the capacity to gather data needed to evaluate their operations and impact. Duties & Responsibilities: •Conduct eligibility screens and in-depth, standardized survey interviews with participants using a remote/virtual platform •Prepare and maintain interview materials •Complete detailed study records using REDCap •Participate in ongoing evaluation to identify any additional interviewer training needs and potential survey tool functionality or administration concerns •Participate in Project NEXUS trainings and required Public Health trainings Minimum Qualifications: Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR Equivalent education/experience. Desired Qualifications: •Ability to establish rapport with diverse groups of people in a very brief amount of time; •Ability to work with communities of people with varied lived experiences in a non-judgmental manner; •Ability to strictly adhere to detailed survey protocols; •Ability to comply with strict protocols for confidentiality; •Strong attention to details; •Basic knowledge of HCV and prevention issues; •Basic knowledge of HIV and prevention issues; •Strong oral communication skills; •Ability to learn NEXUS specific REDCap survey and protocols; •Basic knowledge of and some experience working in harm reduction programs. •Experience in conducting standardized surveys; •Experience working with people who inject drugs and potential subpopulations •*The survey may have reach such as non-injecting drug using peers, Transgender and gender diverse persons, sex workers, people who were recently incarcerated, immigrant communities and homeless communities; •Experience working within harm reduction based programs specifically designed for people who inject drugs; •Experience working with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Communities.
