Summary: 

Blue Ridge School is an all-boys, all-boarding college preparatory school for 185 boys on a stunning 750 acre campus along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Blue Ridge is only 20 miles from Charlottesville, Virginia, a vibrant community and home to the University of Virginia.

Most teachers live on campus in homes provided by the school. On campus housing helps give our safe, family-oriented community the sense of a small village in which students and families live and work together.

This position requires a licensed LPN to work in our Student Health Center (SHC) under the guidance of our RN, the Director of Health & Wellness.  The SHC is maintained 24/7 by several nurses, consisting of the Director of Health & Wellness, evening nurses (approx. 3pm-8pm), an on-call night nurse (approx. 8pm-7am) and weekend nurses. Each nurse is solely responsible for the health of approximately 185 boys in grades 9-12 while serving their respective duty.  Occasionally, the nurse may provide medical guidance to faculty/staff when requested.

This LPN position would be provided a 2-bedroom apartment adjacent to the SHC plus all utilities and meals while school is in session.  The position requires 3 afternoons per week from 3pm – 10pm (with clinic closing at 8pm), serve as the on-call nurse Sunday -Thursday from 10pm – 7am for the occasional emergency and serve 10 weekends during the school year from Friday 8pm – Sunday 8pm.  This is a 9.5 month position, from mid-August – May and is not required to work during Thanksgiving Break (10 days), Christmas Break (2 weeks) or Spring Break (2 weeks). 

The nurse is responsible for identifying and treating health disorders among students and providing instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention.  The employee will evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed.  Decisions made by the nurse require discretionary judgment and analysis.  The nurse must enjoy working with teenage boys from an array of backgrounds and cultures.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides triage care for students and staff while on duty.
• Makes appropriate referrals for emergency care.
• Communicates need for referrals and/or doctor appointments to the Director of Health & Wellness.
• Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required.
• Maintains prescription medicine and medical supply inventories, security and dispensation.
• Ensures that any student that is required to receive medication does so each day.
• Works with athletic trainers and coaches on medical needs of student athletes; including diagnosis and treatment of concussions.
• Communicates and coordinates medical issues/status of boys with parents in a time efficient manner.
• Remains in constant contact with faculty via email to ensure whereabouts of students.
• Acquires, maintains and ensures complete medical information is kept on each member of the student body.
• Maintain basic cleanliness of the Student Health Center, including laundering of bed linens.
• Health counseling and education to students and staff.
• Demonstrate continued professional curiosity and growth.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 60% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with moderate exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
