Summary: Under general supervision, provides care to mothers and babies through the maternity cycle of antepartum, intrapartum, post-partum and neonatal for the medically uncomplicated patient. Provides gynecological care including family planning and the provision of contraception. Performs testing, referral to physicians as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs administrative procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols and available equipment. May perform administrative support functions as required. Responsibilities: 1. Patient Care: Monitors and evaluates medical condition of patient and in collaboration with physician and other disciplines and standards of care or applying appropriate protocols, make decisions regarding treatment changes. Arranges, orders, and evaluates patient's diagnostic and therapeutic services. Refers patient to specialized services as needed. Participates as a preceptor for midwifery students, medical students, interns, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Performs advanced nursing procedures including the provision and management of long acting reversible contraceptives such as IUDs and Implants . Orders and administers appropriate medications within the limits of the appropriate statutory limitations or refers patient to a caregiver in a specialty area. Performs advanced professional nursing practice by collecting health problem information for special assigned patients such as substance abuse, OSHA, geriatrics, analyzes present patient care and the responses to the present care, and develops the patient care plan and treatment. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, receiving current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops. 2. Administration and Documentation Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner. May be assigned to perform leadwork and/or involvement in clinical coordination, health station management or responsibility for special projects which may encompass protocol development, management planning, scheduling and other administrative tasks as necessary to support practice environment. Attends administrative staff meetings to present clinical concerns. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, receiving current literature, and attending in-service meetings and workshops. 3. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 1. Knowledge of advanced practice nursing protocols and procedures sufficient to be able to provide a variety of skilled inpatient and outpatient clinical services. 2. Knowledge of various medications sufficient to be able to dispense and administer to patients. 3. Skill in adapting new information relative to the work assignment through educational seminars, meetings, and staff meetings. 4. Skill in utilizing the principles and practices of effective and persuasive communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies. 5. Skill in obtaining information from patients, calming and reassuring patients and motivating patients to accept treatments. 6. Skill in diagnostic and treatment techniques. 7. Ability to train other employees, medical students and interns. 8. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in selecting proper treatment. 9.
