The Department of Health Behavior, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is inviting applications for the newly established Magic City LGBTQ Endowed Professorship. This is a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, tenured or tenure earning. Rank and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in psychology, nursing, public health or an allied field and a strong record of scholarly work in sexual and gender minority health and well-being.
The successful candidate is expected to engage the LGBTQ community of Birmingham, as well as develop an independent and externally funded research program with a focus on LGBTQ health, health equity, structural racism, intersectionality, and intersectional stigmas to reflect issues of LGBTQ health germane to the Southern region of the US. While the primary role of the Endowed Professorship will be to conduct LGBTQ-related research, the successful candidate will also be expected to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, teach courses, and participate in service activities in the School, University, and broader community.
Offering unparalleled opportunities for research, teaching, and service, the Department of Health Behavior has expertise in sexual health, obesity and lifestyle intervention, prevention and control of addictive behaviors, mental health, and research methods including community-based health promotion, telehealth, and implementation science. The Department provides education and training in the social and behavioral sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level and offers two degree programs (MPH and PhD) in the School of Public Health.
Founded in 1978, the UAB School of Public Health has grown to 75 full-time faculty and 1100 students. In 2019, the school had more than $37 million in research funding and has been ranked in the top 20 NIH-funded Schools of Public Health for the last 10 years.
