As the largest Academic department in the College of Veterinary Medicine with 70 Faculty, the Department of Clinical Sciences values both clinical and basic research, contributes to classroom and laboratory teaching throughout the curriculum, and provides clinical training of DVM professional students, interns and residents through their professional service in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. In support of a collaborative research project between faculty members in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Department of Animal Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, work in collaboration with animal husbandry staff, students and research staff to manage care, dog play time and day-to-day logistics for approximately 100 research dogs. Responsibilities include: Executing dog play time for research dogs once to twice daily. This includes animal enrichment techniques and cleaning/ maintaining pens following outings. This individual will also assist with dog handling/restraining, providing medications, transporting samples, shipping samples, assisting in data entry and maintaining supplies and logs for enrichment activities. This is an entry level position with ample room for growth. This is a 6-month temporary position, 19 hours per week. No benefits are associated with this position. Required Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent with one year of related experience. Must be available to work early evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled. This is an afternoon shift which will begin mid-morning and end early evening; work week will be Tuesday- Saturday. Must be able to work outdoors in all-weather types. Must have a valid NYS driver's license. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail are essential. Basic computer skills for record keeping of animals. Ability to work independently while using sound judgment but also work collaboratively in a large team is essential. Ability to confidently work with a diverse group of individuals including students, project staff, veterinary team and CUHA personnel. Preferred Qualifications: Prior knowledge of animal safety & handling and technical skills including but not limited to blood collection is considered an asset. Knowledge of canine behavior and experience handling groups of dogs in a social setting also considered an asset. Focus should be on injury prevention between dogs and personnel safety.
