Department DENTISTRY-PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY (IN-DSPE-IUINA) Department Information The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. Job Summary Provide chair side assistance to dental students, faculty and licensed dental staff during dental treatment with patients from ages 1 to 15 years. Provide chair side assistance to dentist by passing instruments, holding devices such as suction tubes, and cleaning patients' mouth during and after procedures. Assist dentists with local anesthesia and nitrous oxide (N20). Take patients' blood pressure and monitor patient's vital statistics during procedures. Instruct dental students on 4-handed dentistry, DAU and on taking proper x-rays using bite-wing tabs on children with tiny mouths, occlusal films and Panorex x-rays. Use and teach behavior management techniques to pre-doctoral and dental assistant students to use with children with special needs including, but not limited to, autism, English as a second language and craniofacial anomalies. Provide care and instructions to patients following use of nitrous oxide. Document treatment by charting in patient records. Demonstrate proper infection control procedures in set up. Confirm that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organize them for procedures. Ensure that equipment used for dental procedures is sterilized and areas are clean and ready to receive new patients. Assist front office in scheduling follow-up visits. Track student experiences and make schedule changes ensuring students are given the opportunity to work on several different cases with children. This position is posted at a TE05 level but may be filled at another level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Required Qualifications Pediatric Dental Assistant (TE06) Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent with completion of an accredited Dental Assisting program or two years of dental assisting experience, and one year of experience assisting in a pediatric dental office. X-ray license. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities. Dental Assistant (TE05) Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accreditted Dental Assisting program or two years of dental assisting experience. X-ray license. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities. Dental Assistant II (TE05) Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accreditted Dental Assisting program or two years of dental assisting experience, and six months of experience in a higher education dental enviornment. X-ray license. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities. Preferred Qualifications Dental Assistant certification. Experience in Pediatrics. Working Conditions / Demands Must be able to remain in a stationary position at dental unit that will include movement to pass instruments and supplies. Frequently move supplies and instruments to dental units up to 50 pounds. Must be able to identify, coordinate, and utilize all dental instruments needed for procedures. Frequently communicates with patients and faculty about treatment and other follow up. Regular attendance is required. Up-to-date immunizations and annual TB test are required. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without an accommodation.
