Position Summary: Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is recruiting for the position of Chair for the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. As a Department Chair, the individual should have general administrative responsibilities for, as well as participate in, the educational, research and service programs of the department. A primary goal is to build and enhance the research mission of the department. We are seeking an individual with outstanding leadership qualities and a record of accomplishment as a well-funded biomedical researcher. The successful candidate should be a leader committed to the development of the department as a leading research unit of the medical school with a focus on extramural grant funding, and to all forms of academic excellence and contributions to the educational missions of the institution. The Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics was formed by the merger of the former Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology with the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics in 2014. It has over 40 faculty, including some affiliated with the Public Health Research Institute (PHRI) and is primarily based in a stand-alone building (the International Center for Public Health), which it shares with PHRI. Other department faculty are based in the Newark Cancer Center and in the Medical Science Building, each of which house other basic science and clinical faculty. The department has a strong research base, and it participates in teaching in the medical, dental and graduate schools. Minimum Education and Experience: Doctoral degree, including PhD, MD, DMD or equivalent. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The individual must be qualified for an academic appointment at the rank of at least Associate Professor. Past experience as a faculty member in an academic department, or similar institutional environment, with a strong record of scholarship and research.
