The Department of Health Services has an excellent opportunity for a full-time Research Coordinator to work with the Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC), one of 26 Prevention Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other research projects within the department. This position will coordinate research activities for a newly awarded Special Interest Project (SIP) grant from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) on the Validity and Reliability of Cancer Screening Questions for the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) (SIP 20-005). This will include conducting and analyzing results from cognitive interviews with a diverse population of research participants.  In addition, the position will support data collection and analysis for the Amigas Latinas Motivando el Alma study of mental health among Latina immigrant women. Due to the study population and this position’s role as an interviewer, candidates must be fluent in English and Spanish.

Housed in the UW School of Public Health, the Department of Health Services is a dynamic academic and research department with the mission of working with partners in public health and health care to prepare leaders, design solutions, and conduct innovative research that is translated into practice and policy. The Department is steadfast in its efforts to improve and promote the health of all populations, and staff contribute daily and directly to the work of faculty, students, researchers and other staff, providing support and expertise to the Department's common cause.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with research team on development and testing of project materials, including recruitment, intervention and evaluation materials
  • Conduct data collection activities, such as recruit participants, conduct qualitative interviews and phone surveys
  • Conduct data monitoring and analysis activities, such as code qualitative data; track and archive data and research results; and synthesize findings
  • Attend and participate in investigator, research project team, and other cross-institutional meetings
  • Coordinate communication with study team, government and community partners
  • Prepare and collaborate on manuscripts and PowerPoint presentations

    Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Social Work, Health Administration, or a related field
  • One year of experience in the field of public health with specific experience in community-based participatory research and health promotion
  • Experience coordinating complex projects with multiple project team members who come from a variety of professional backgrounds
  • Ability to represent HPRC in a professional and congenial manner with professional colleagues both within academia and in public and private organizations outside of academia
  • Experience working with academic investigators and researchers, members of community organizations
  • Demonstrated research skills in data collection and qualitative methods
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish
  • Ability to work both independently with limited supervision and as part of a team
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and to address complex situations with creativity
  • Ability to communicate well with people from diverse ethnic/racial, socioeconomic, and professional backgrounds
  • Ability to review existing research, literature, and resources to contribute to the creation of evidence-based materials and research instruments
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail
  • Ability to balance multiple demands simultaneously under time constraints
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to drive to community partners sites throughout Washington state as needed. After hire, a successful completion of UW Fleet Services Basic Driver Training will be required to operate University Vehicles

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Two to three years of work experience in the field of public health
  • Familiarity with the UW human subjects/Institutional Review Board process
  • Experiences with Atlas.ti or other qualitative analysis software
  • Experience working with UW administrative systems

    Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary to meet deadlines
