The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications to apply for several 9-month, tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor positions in the new PPVM program. Certain positions may be offered as 12-month appointments. All positions are full-time, benefit-eligible, and are supervised by the department heads in the disciplinary areas in which each candidate is hired.  Desired start date is June 2021 with teaching responsibilities to begin August 2021.

The successful candidate is expected to teach approximately 50 percent or greater time within the new Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM). This program will encompass the first two years of a veterinary curriculum whereby each year a cohort of 20 students will begin the professional curriculum and complete the first two years of Veterinary School at SDSU, and then finish their final two years of the DVM degree requirements at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Teaching ability is expected in at least two to three areas of basic sciences and early veterinary clinical sciences.

For these positions, the program is seeking faculty with the ability to teach in the following areas: clinical and/or anatomic pathology, veterinary anatomy and microscopic anatomy (histology), systemic (integrated) physiology, endocrinology and reproduction, genetics and genomics, biochemistry (cell and molecular biology), veterinary imaging, companion and food animal medicine and surgery, veterinary and public health agents of disease (bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology), veterinary dermatology, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, preventative medicine, clinical skills, diagnostic lab techniques, clinical epidemiology and research methods, public health, or closely related disciplines.

Some positions such as in reproductive physiology and genetics (depending on the extent of the expertise and species alignment) could be established within the SDSU Animal Science Department, Dairy and Food Science Department, Biology/Microbiology Department (in the College of Natural Sciences), or other aligned department. Depending on the candidate’s expertise, between 20 and 50 percent of the appointment could include establishing an extramurally funded research program and/or contributions to enhance the diagnostic services of the South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL). The research program should complement basic or clinical veterinary sciences, and/or the college’s focus on One-Health or production agriculture involving the human-animal-environmental health triad within their home department. This cluster hire provides the opportunity to collaborate with new and existing faculty members. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The primary responsibility for each of these positions is to teach in the Professional DVM degree program in at least two to three areas of expertise and coordinate the course content to achieve the same learning objectives as the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine’s first two years’ curriculum. Some pre-veterinary undergraduate teaching may also be possible. In addition, each candidate will be expected to establish an extramurally funded research program in their home department and/or contribute their expertise to the development or enhancement of current diagnostic services of the South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL). Research programs could incorporate concepts of One-Health involving the human-animal-environmental health triad, complement basic or clinical veterinary sciences, or address production agriculture in their area of expertise and be applicable to South Dakota and other current stakeholders.
