Job Summary Under general supervision, reviews medical record documentation to abstract and assign diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers for statistical classification and reimbursement purposes. Performs various coding assignments under the direction of Coding Management. Provides feedback regarding documentation and coding issues. Utilizes software applications and coding references to perform coding related tasks. Additionally, assists in training, mentoring, and quality assurance of Level I and Level II coders as directed by Coding Management. Required to interact with clinical departments as needed. Demonstrates leadership and teambuilding skills. Facility An Inpatient Coder Level III's primary task is to code and abstract inpatient DRG based accounts. In addition to coding Inpatient accounts the Coder Level III may also be tasked with other types of coding from Level I or II work. An Outpatient Coder Level III' primary task is to code and abstract high level outpatient accounts, day surgery, observation, and procedural based areas. Professional A Coder Level III's primary task and ability would be in coding inpatient, observational, surgical, and procedural based areas.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Education 1. Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate required. Experience 1. Four years medical coding with multi-specialty experience or specialty certification. 2. Strong procedural coding required. 3. Experience reviewing medical record documentation required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Applies advanced knowledge of coding, with a knowledge of hospital based academic guidelines. 2. Knowledge of encoder and data abstraction software. 3. Strong knowledge of billing and reimbursement. 4. Possess good oral and written communication skills. 5. Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. 6. Must be capable of reading and interpreting coding guidelines and making subsequent coding decisions. 7. Knowledgeable in researching coding related topics and issues. 8. Ability to handle a fast paced environment and be a positive role model. 9. Must pass a coding proficiency pre-hire test with 80% accuracy or higher. Certificates, Licenses and Registration 1. Coding Certification by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or America Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) required.
