The Department of Health Services at the University of Washington (UW) seeks to fill one full-time faculty position with a focus on Anti-Racism as a Full Professor (tenure-track) on a 12-month service period, with an anticipated start date as early as fall 2020. The position would serve as the Director for the Center for the Study of Anti-Racism and Health (ARCH). The purpose of ARCH to provide a community of scholarship and activism – in the School of Public Health, across the University, and within the broader community – concerning interventions that can break down the societal and institutional structures of racism and, thus, to reduce future inequalities in health. We seek candidates with demonstrated experience in research, teaching, mentorship, and administration related to structural racism, its impact on health, and approaches to disrupt it. The Director is expected to engage in both university and community service at the local, regional, national, and international levels and encouraged to establish their own research agenda, including how racism intersects with other social inequities. Faculty members in our department are expected to: (a) conduct an independent research program that complements Department, School, and University research initiatives and programs, (b) participate in collaborative research programs as appropriate to their interests, (c) teach in the Department's educational programs, and (d) mentor undergraduate, Master and doctoral students. In addition, the successful candidate would be expected to regularly participate in Program and Departmental activities such as mentoring and providing career development for diverse professionals and students, leading seminars, guest speaking, orientation(s), program and department faculty meetings, graduation ceremonies, search committees, and relevant academic activities in the Department. Environment The Department of Health Services is a diverse department (60 regular faculty and 280 adjunct, affiliate and clinical faculty) with faculty expertise in health economics, health care systems, health promotion, social determinants of health, and social science. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to be affiliated with several other centers within the department, in addition to ARCH, including the Center for Health Innovation and Policy Science, the Health Promotion Research Center, and the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. The UW has a Population Health Initiative, which brings faculty from across the University together to address challenges in human health, social and economic equity and environmental resilience. The UW is also home to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent population health research center that provides rigorous and comparable measurement of the world's most important health problems and evaluates the strategies used to address them. The University of Washington is a public research institution with a $3.4 billion endowment, It was founded in 1861 in the Pacific Northwest Puget Sound area. The Seattle campus, where ARCH is housed, comprises 703 acres in the University District approximately four miles north of downtown Seattle. UW also has two additional campuses, one is 37 miles to the south in Tacoma and the other 17 miles the north in Bothell. The School of Public Health, located on the Seattle campus, was established in 1970. The School has five departments: Health Services, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, and Global Health, the latter established in 2006 in partnership with the School of Medicine. The UW has 140 departments within the various colleges and schools. Depending on the interests and qualifications of the successful candidate, an adjunct appointment may be considered with other UW departments or affiliate institutions.
