Essential Functions:
POSITION SUMMARY: This is a position for a parent educator, in a University-based clinical program for stressed urban families with very young children.� The parenting education occurs in a group-based format, and the curriculum is currently delivered virtually, via ZOOM.� The curriculum follows the Incredible Years model, which is strength-based, family-centered, non-judgmental, and backed by strong evidence of long-term beneficial impact to families. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Provides professional group facilitation, parent instruction and delivery of information to families implementing the Incredible Years Toddler Program curriculum.
- Provides virtual group meetings with program parents for the purpose of providing practical information Promoting Children’s Social and Emotional Development.
- Child-directed play to promote positive relationships
- Promoting toddler’s language with descriptive commenting
- Social and emotional coaching
- Positive attention, praise and encouragement
- Handling separations and reunions
- Setting developmentally appropriate limits
- Using distractions, redirections & ignore effectively to handle misbehavior
- Uses the Incredible Years Curriculum which includes vignettes and reading material to enhance and support each topic.
- As a group facilitator, enables participative discussions and learning among group members, allowing them to express and present different opinions while maintaining a respectful environment and staying on track with the delivery of mentioned curriculum.
- Completes all required documentation regarding the virtual group meetings: parent’s attendance, class participation, completion of home activity work sheets, quizzes, overall understanding and ability to apply the parenting principles discussed and other reports as requested by the research coordinator.
- Makes referrals for additional services for parent and/or child as deemed necessary.
- Assists in recruiting families to participate in program, attends trainings, and participates in professional development activities.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in public health, social work (with a health focus), nutrition, early childhood education, elementary education, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in early childhood education, psychology, social work, public health, elementary education, or a related field.
- Group facilitation experience, comfortable working with group dynamics while managing a class process.
- Two years’ experience working with at-risk or low-income families.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- The ability to build positive trusting relationships by being enthusiastic and an active listener, facilitating thought, understanding others’ perspectives, drawing energy from the group rather from within, and recognizing how those around you are feeling.
- Competent problem solving, conflict resolution, team building, planning, organizing and at making observations and recognizing when interactions, situations or group dynamics change. And if there are disruptive behaviors, ability to promptly intervene to disperse or extinguish them.
- Assertiveness to get things on track with appropriate suggestions or redirecting group efforts.
- Ability to summarize chunks of information for clarity and understanding.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to coordinate a large project and manage own schedule, to complete work by deadlines, and to work with little supervision.
Salary Range:
The hiring range for this position is $18.81 - $23.52 per hour.
