The Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is seeking a candidate for a full time Research Project Manager to work closely with the study PIs and CoDirectors, and oversee the team on the Apple Women's Health Study (AWHS). In the first study of its kind, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has teamed up with Apple and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to gain a deeper understanding of how certain demographic and lifestyle factors could have an impact on menstrual cycles and gynecologic conditions including infertility, menopause, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The cycle tracking data from your iPhone and/or Apple Watch (optional), along with participants' survey responses, will help inform the development of innovative products for menstrual cycles, risk assessment, and screening of gynecologic conditions. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Manage the daily operations of the AWHS, escalating research-related queries to the PI when appropriate; reviews, monitors, and tracks progress on timelines for a complex series of study activities, including ensuring completion of deliverables, managing competing priorities, and working reciprocally with project staff and external partners.
  • Facilitates communication and collaboration with research personnel within and across institutions, most notably with partners at SPH, NIEHS, project sponsor, and team members.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and enforcing standard operating procedures (SOPs); develops, submits and amends IRB protocol, making use of clinicaltrials.gov and sharing with sponsor for appropriate reporting.
  • Serves as the main manager for participant call center and executes proper reporting of call center metrics and updates to PI and sponsor.
  • Collates and revises surveys for iterative survey design and implementation.
  • Prepare materials for project meeting with the PI, local study staff, and other collaborators; assist in preparation and delivery of project updates and reports; leads meeting and conference coordination.
  • Helps to oversee the communications editorial calendar (work closely with the PI and Social Media Coordinator for this) to ensure alignment with project milestones for participant recruitment and retention.
  • Liaise with department's administrative core to effectively coordinate new hire processes and execute onboarding and off boarding processes; tracks project team's inventory, personnel, payments and budget.
  • May be responsible for supervising staff in the future.
  • May present research findings to internal and external audiences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of 1 year from date of hire, with the possibility of extension.

PLEASE NOTE: Occasional night and/or weekend work may be required.

PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.

  • This position has a 90 day orientation and review (O&R) period. The O&R period will be waived for any internal Harvard employee transfers.

Union: 55 - Hvd Union Cler & Tech Workers

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required
  • 3+ years of related experience is required
  • Experience with IRB protocol is required


  • Master's Degree or MPH is strongly preferred
  • Experience in study management preferred
  • Previous experience with IRBs, protocol development, training research staff preferred
  • Knowledge of standard research methods and statistical techniques preferred
  • Experience with applicable computer technologies such as Adobe, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint preferred
  • Experience making visually appealing reports, posters, and slides for the presentation of research projects preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills preferred
  • Strong writing skills preferred
  • Works well independently and as a team preferred
  • Strong leadership skills preferred
  • Careful attention to detail preferred
  • Effectively prioritizes tasks and set deadlines preferred
  • Identifies problems and develop solutions preferred
  • Takes initiative and an effective multi-tasker preferred
