The Research Scientist 5 will provide scientific and management leadership to the NYS Department of Health’s Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment. The Bureau currently consists of 20 professionals, with expertise in areas including toxicology, exposure assessment, risk assessment, chemistry, biology, environmental assessment and sampling, data analysis, and others. Bureau responsibilities broadly involve assessing the potential for exposures and risks when people come in contact with toxic substances through air, water, soil, food, and consumer products. These responsibilities are accomplished by investigating exposures, assessing risks using chemical risk assessment techniques, carrying out studies, and providing information and advice to people on the effects of toxic substances and methods for exposure reduction.
Substantial experience in areas such as: developing chemical-specific guidelines for drinking water, ambient water, air, soil, and consumer products; assessing risks and developing exposure reduction recommendations in response to instances of chemical and biological releases to the environment; assessing the public health impacts of contaminants in indoor and outdoor air; and chemical risk assessment. Experience in managing environmental public health programs. Knowledge of relevant federal and other NYS agency programs; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in interacting with and presenting to the public; and the ability to communicate effectively with policy makers and public officials.
Master’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, or pharmacology and five years of professional postdegree research experience in that field;or, a Doctorate in one of the above fields and three years of such experience
