The Chair of the Department of Surgery is a critical leader within SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. The Chair will provide executive leadership, direction and administration of the Department of Surgery in its College of Medicine (COM). The individual who assumes this position will be responsible for ensuring a tradition of excellence into the future.
The Chair will recruit, direct, and develop a faculty who, as a group, can provide the full range of surgical services, including transplant, pediatric, cardiothoracic, and vascular surgery, at University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB) and Kings Country Hospital Center (KCHC), to supplement the already existing strong programs based at the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital (BVAH), Coney Island Hospital Center (CIH), and our other affiliates. We expect that such a faculty can partner with other faculty, especially our pulmonary, nephrology, and cardiology divisions in the Department of Medicine to build a thriving practice that draws patients and referrals from throughout Brooklyn and beyond.
We foresee that this service will have extensive educational and clinical affiliations with other teaching hospitals in our area and will provide services of a quality that will make it the first choice for surgical care in our region. The Chair will also lead his/her faculty (both current and those recruited) in the development of innovative clinical and basic research initiatives, either independently or in collaboration with other investigators on our faculty. We foresee that this renascent department will have extensive educational and clinical affiliations with other teaching hospitals in our area and will provide services of a quality that will make it the first choice for surgical care in our region. With this foundation, we expect significant growth in sub-specialty care at University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB), its associated satellite facilities, and Kings County Hospital (KCHC). We also expect that the faculty the Chair will recruit will significantly expand the range of services available to its patients while providing a superb educational experience for your residents and students.
The Chair will maintain and enhance Downstate’s residency and fellowship programs in surgery and our clerkship and elective offering for medical students. Our graduates have long been recognized as being well prepared to make significant contributions in their discipline, but we believe that we can further enhance the quality and reputation of these programs and will rely on the Chair and the faculty to devote considerable attention to this task. Together with Downstate’s academic partners, these programs will prepare the next generation of leaders and practitioners in this field for careers in Brooklyn, New York City, and the nation, and carve a place for Downstate as a leading center for state-of-the-art surgical services.
Building a broad array of strong research programs in both basic and translational research and developing innovative research initiatives, either independently or in collaboration with other investigators on our faculty. A reputation for path-breaking research will, in turn, enhance our ability to attract patients, referrals, and residents, creating the foundation for a new phase of departmental growth.
