The Commissioner is responsible for overseeing and managing the Department of Public Health (DPH). The Commissioner will provide leadership and assume accountability for the overall strategic, financial, operational planning, and high-impact and quality outcomes consistent with the goals and objectives of the State of Connecticut. The Commissioner is responsible for leading a dynamic and innovative organization across health promotion programs; research, data, and analytics; health policy and advocacy; communications, outreach, and activism; and more. The Commissioner will utilize numerous approaches to achieve these initiatives, including: facilitating public/private partnerships; coordinating and collaborating with community partners; supporting improved access to preventive and primary care services; educating the public concerning the importance of health promotion and protection policies and programs; and advising the Governor’s office on public health policy issues.

Demonstrated ability to bring creative and innovative solutions.The Commissioner of Public Health shall either (1) be a physician, graduated by an acceptable medical college, recognized by one of the medical examining boards of this state, experienced in actual practice of his profession, skilled in sanitary science and experienced in public health administration and shall have a minimum of one year of university graduate instruction in public health administration as evidenced by a certificate of graduation or a degree in public health, or (2) hold a graduate degree in public health. |
