General Summary: The Executive Vice-Chair (EVC) will be a neonatologist in the Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine who will lead the provision and advancement of excellence in clinical operations and care alongside responsibility in financial accountability and strategic development for the Department in close collaboration with the Department Chair, Department Administrator and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Vice-President. The EVC will report directly to Department Chair, Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine. The overall focus of this key leadership position will be to develop and execute a strategic plan for excellence in clinical care in all newborn care delivered by the Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine at BWH that aligns with departmental financial needs and academic mission (research and education). These services include the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at BWH, delivery room and postpartum newborn care at BWH, fetal care and infant follow up clinics at BWH, and the neonatologist clinical care in the special care nursery (SCN) at Newton Wellesley Hospital (NWH). Overall Statistics: Faculty: 51 Neonatologists and Pediatricians Professional Staff: Currently 5 NP/PAs growing to 13 Support Staff: 11 (Project Analysts and Senior Administrative Assistants) Practice Locations: Four (BWH NICU, Well Nursery, NWH, and 221 Follow Up Clinic) Research Staff: 45 (Administrator, Research Coordinators, Research Assistants) Residency Program: Combined with Boston Children’s Hospital and MGH Fellowship Program: Combined with Boston Children’s Hospital Leadership and Clinical Responsibilities: •Develop and execute a strategic plan for excellence in clinical newborn care delivered by the Department of Pediatric Newborn Medicine at BWH that aligns with departmental financial needs and academic mission. •Supervise leadership of the Medical Director of NICU at BWH, Medical Director of Well Newborns (Postpartum) at BWH, Medical Director of SCN at NWH and Directors of Growth and Development Unit, Neurocritical Care, Respiratory Care, Fetal Care Program and Center for Child Development Follow Up Programs at BWH. •Collaborate with all clinical leadership (Nursing, Respiratory Care, Social Work, Nutrition, Rehabilitation Services, Administration, etc.), to assist in executive level strategies for the development of clinical programs, policies, and practices that optimize clinical care and outcomes for newborns and their families at BWH. •Monitor metrics of clinical care for newborns at BWH; direct and oversee performance improvement initiatives, including all quality assurance, patient and staff safety, family satisfaction, and service improvement initiatives including the Vermont Oxford Network, NeoQIC, MA Quality Collaborative, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, The Joint Commission, morbidity and mortality review, and infection control. •Develop sustainable and scalable approaches to improve quality outcomes and standard of care for all newborns at BWH. Financial Responsibilities: •Responsibility for oversight of clinical finances including revenue and expense. •Establish a financially sustainable staffing model for patient care for both physician and advanced practice providers that provides excellence in patient care, safety and patient experience. •Apply key skills in optimizing financial management of the Departmental clinical operations. •Participate in Department and Hospital activities related to optimization of billing and coding and compliance. Support and communicate policies and procedures that promote a full adherence to all relevant compliance guidelines. Supervisory and Academic Responsibilities: •Supervise and oversee physician clinical performance including physician medical records documentation, effective teamwork among physicians and other disciplines; coverage schedules. •Communicate effectively with all members of the faculty and clinical community on a regular basis regarding updates in clinical programs and practices in an open and engaging manner. •Create and maintain a clinical mentorship program for all faculty members. •Assist in annual review for each faculty member in relation to clinical care and practice. •Assist in physician and advanced practice providers recruitment. •Assist and supervise the Department’s Director of Education in the coordination of teaching as it relates to all clinical issues, including the training programs with Children’s Hospital and MGH, to optimize the goals of excellence in patient care alongside high quality education of our trainees. •Foster and champion the role and importance of newborn research as a pillar of our mission. •Engage in institutional representation for BWH or Partners wide forums as deemed appropriate with Chair, e.g. QARM, CIC. Qualifications: •Board certified or board eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. •Demonstrated leadership skills with a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience that has included fiscal responsibility. •Complex problem-solving skills for clinical, personnel, administrative and fiscal issues. •Initiative and ability to work both independently and collaboratively. •Excellent communication (both oral and written), collaboration and presentation skills. •Exceptional judgement and discretion with senior management on political, fiscal and confidential issues. •Ability to manage multiple complex and concurrent projects.
