Job Description | | GroupBox1 | | | | The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOMHM) and the Department of Education (DOE) responsible for promoting the health of the 1.3 million school children enrolled in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools in New York City. This is achieved through a combination of public health initiatives, case management, education and direct clinical services. School physicians have been serving the students of NYC for over a century.

The OSH offers a unique opportunity for an experienced clinician with an interest in population health to work collaboratively with students, parents, community providers and school leaders.
Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Assistant Medical Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the medical program for students in pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Reports to: Medical Director, Office of School Health, DOHMH.
Direct Reports: Field physicians.
Key Relationships: Works closely with DOHMH, OSH, and DOE staff members.
Responsibilities Duties will include but not limited to:
• Providing supervision for the Supervising Physicians assigned to specialized school health program, pre-K-8 schools in all boroughs. • Serving as a consultant to the Supervising Physicians and school administrative staff regarding school-related health concerns. • Conducts and/or supervises highly medical/technical procedures of a diagnostic, survey or training nature in Pediatric medicine • Developing and implementing the strategic plan for the OSH K-8 Program. • Responsible for the maintenance of medical standards and the coordination of research findings. • Supporting all medical initiatives put forth by the Office of School Health, e.g. Asthma, Reproductive health, Obesity and Diabetes Initiatives. • Collaborating with the Medical Director to set and implement program priorities and policies to ensure the effective delivery and coordination of school health services at the regional level. • Working with senior medical unit leadership to conduct quality improvement activities, research, community outreach, policy development, staff training and development, presentations, and other special projects. • Collaborating with other DOHMH and DOE programs to coordinate health-related services, education, and activities provided to students enrolled in NYC schools; • Facilitating the implementation of OSH protocols and initiatives, including Asthma Care Management services for STH • Developing processes to facilitate Asthma care management for students with poorly controlled Asthma. • Ensuring communication and collaboration between the supervisory levels of the Medical and Nursing teams. • Serving as a participant in the Medical Unit clinical planning meetings. • Keeping abreast of health management policy statements and emerging research within the health community relevant to school health. • Providing clinical assistance in the event of an environmental or communicable disease occurrence. • Aligning efforts in advancing health equity across NYC schools. | | | | | | | Minimum Qual Requirements | | GroupBox1 | | | | Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either: a) Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or b) Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency. To be assigned to Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above, one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area. To be assigned to Assignment Level III, individuals must possess: a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and b) A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree; and c) At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience. To be assigned to Assignment Level IV, individuals must possess: a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty; and d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. | | | | | | | Preferred Skills | | GroupBox1 | | | | • Experience with clinical and/or administrative supervision of physicians. • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; proficiency in internet usage and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). • Board Certification in Pediatrics or Adolescent Health. • Medicaid provider. • Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master's level training in a human service field, with specific training and experience in child development, common child psychiatric disorders, and mental health education. • Ability to work effectively with school principals, professionals, and other personnel from a wide range of social institutions and organizations. • Experience working in a clinical setting; familiarity with the DOE/DOHMH and educational accommodations. • Knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. • Strong presentation skills. | | | | | | | Additional Information | | GroupBox1 | | | | **IMPORTANT NOTES TO ALL CANDIDATES:
