The Executive Director (ED) of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative will oversee the strategic and administrative management of HHI, in close coordination with the Faculty Director, to whom this position reports. The ED will serve as a thought partner for senior leadership across HHI and with various internal stakeholders, driving exploration, critical thinking, solution generation and implementation of strategies to ensure the status of HHI as a highly relevant and visible academic contributor to the humanitarian sector and the academic community at Harvard. The ED will work closely with HHI's senior management team and other staff members to ensure that HHI is a smoothly running, productive research environment for associated faculty and staff. A key component of this role will be effective leadership in communication, coordination and relationship management with: Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's Department of Global Health and Population, Harvard University's Office of the President and Provost (to which HHI also jointly reports programmatically), the administrative team of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine (an integral collaborator), and a network of faculty, students, and programs across Harvard University that are conducting the interdisciplinary work of humanitarian research and education.
Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:- Provide academic and administrative leadership for HHI
- Provide direct oversight for financial administration, financial compliance, and HR-related matters, in collaboration with and within the reporting structure of the Department of Global Health and Population
- Develop, implement, and monitor the progress of a strategic vision and plan for organization in conjunction with the HHI leadership team, including a fundraising strategy to achieve the strategic vision
- Contribute to fundraising (in partnership with the Harvard T.H. Chan School's Office of External Relations) and proposal development
- Directly supervise and manage the performance of 6 staff and academic appointments, including a Senior Assistant Director, Program Director, Program Manager, Research and Evaluation Manager, Research Associate, and Assistant Professor; indirectly provide supervision and management of all other HHI staff and faculty
- Develop relationships across Harvard to create interdisciplinary and collaborative programming
- Further develop and strengthen key relationships with external collaborators, including United Nation agencies, Non-governmental organizations, and other academic institutions
- Provide a comprehensive strategy for events, panels, forums and symposiums that bring together thought leaders on topics such as public health issues in the humanitarian sector, migrations as it relates to climate change, food insecurities, international humanitarian law and vulnerable populations
- Create and implement a communication strategy highlighting the research of HHI as well as humanitarian issues domestically and globally
- Other duties as assigned
