Department Description

This is a full time, career Clinical Research Coordinator position with an end date for funding purposes only of 6/30/21. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Rebecca J. Schmidt, the Clinical Research Coordinator leads the implementation of the Bio-Specimen Assessment of Fire Effects (B-SAFE) Pregnancy Study protocol. The goal of B-SAFE is to establish a cohort of women at different stages of pregnancy during Northern California wildfires and their children, collect biospecimens and survey information that will be used in future studies to determine exposure loads, mechanistic responses, and health biomarkers.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Research Coordinator assists with a variety of multi-disciplinary epidemiology research protocols based in the Department of Public Health Sciences and approved by the UC Davis Institutional Review Board (IRB) that obtain human specimens from participants enrolled in research studies and serves as lead with B-SAFE staff and/or Student Assistants to facilitate subjects' participation, coordinate and implement data collection by scheduling and executing study visits and interviews (in clinic and in-home), tracking participants, and collecting biological and environmental specimens.


Additionally, the Clinical Research Coordinator helps prepare written summaries regarding the research and helps conduct community outreach and oversees the day to day activities of the B-SAFE pregnancy study following the study protocol and strictly adhering to IRB and HIPAA regulations, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, Health System policy and procedures, and university standard operating procedures.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, health, or science-related field and/or equivalent experience, education and training.
  • Demonstrated experience in the execution of human research protocols.
  • Knowledge of IRB Administration policies and procedures and HIPAA regulations and ability to monitor compliance by staff and Students. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy, as needed to schedule approximately 30 study visits each month and independently coordinate 2-3 visits per week, and maintain participant files and databases on a large number of study participants.
  • Ability to use computer to manage databases, access participant information, e-mail and use word processing software and demonstrate proper use of spelling and grammar.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate positively and effectively with participants and providers, colleagues and other persons from diverse cultures and backgrounds, over the phone, in person, and in written/email communications.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability to lead a team of staff and students who are engaged in a variety of research-related tasks.
  • Ability to foster and maintain goof morale among team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive and cooperative attitude even during unexpected schedule or priority changes and retain interpersonal effectiveness.
  • Must be flexible and available to work evening and weekend hours according to appointment scheduling needs.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with a minimum of supervision, following study protocol.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and assignments based on the needs of the research team and the research participants, seeking input from the Principal Investigator when needed.
  • Experience in a research data collection role - administering questionnaires and collection of data and/or specimens from research participants.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to common inquiries from participants, regulatory agencies, physicians or others in the community.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Health System policies and procedures, ICH/GCP guidelines, and Federal Regulations applicable to clinical research.
  • Administrative skills and ability to exercise good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in making decisions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and assignments based on the needs of the research team and the research participants, seeking input from the PI when needed.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the study objectives, procedures and policies desired.
  • Skills and knowledge to practice safe handling, transport, and processing of biological and environmental specimens.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of small research projects.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Certified phlebotomy skills preferred.


Special Requirements
  • IRB and HIPAA certification must be completed once hired.
  • Must possess a California's Driver's License and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed). Must be willing to drive self to a variety of locations to perform work. Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice program.
  • Must be able to regularly travel/drive within 2-3 hours of the Davis/Sacramento area.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and split shifts in order to meet the needs of the research participants and studies.
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime and evening and/or weekend shifts.
  • Must follow Standard Precautions, in addition to all departmental and university policies.
  • Must possess the ability to cope with exposure to participants and potentially contaminated specimens, including blood, urine, saliva, hair, toenails, placenta, and umbilical cord blood. Must be able to lift, move, and handle objects weighting up to 25 lbs.
  • Are required to utilize body mechanics (walking, sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, and reaching) when necessary to carry out all job duties and function.
  • Must participate in the on-call rotation schedule for study participant deliveries.
