Posting Summary: ***This position is based in UVA's satellite office in Christiansburg, Virginia***

The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral associate position. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Jamie Zoellner, other investigators and project staff in the PHS department and Cancer Center without Walls, stakeholders from Virginia communities, and Virginia residents. The research experiences will span a number of community-based research projects that target obesity- and cancer-related initiatives. The primary funded research projects include:

- Kids SipSmartER: A multi-level behavioral and health literacy intervention to reduce sugar-sweetened beverages among Appalachian middle-school students (Funding: National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Minority Health and Health Disparities)
- A randomized-controlled trial to compare the reach, effectiveness and maintenance of two family-based childhood obesity treatment programs in the medically underserved Dan River Region (Funding: Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute)
- Cancer Center without Walls: Advancing Patient-Centered Research for Cancer Control in Rural VA (Funding: PCORI Eugene Washington Engagement Contract)
- Building research capacity to improve colorectal cancer screening in rural Southwest Virginia Clinics (Funding: Institutes of Health/ National Cancer Institute)

Qualifications:
- PhD in behavioral sciences, nutrition, public health, psychology, sociology or related field required
- Expertise and training in obesity and/or cancer, community-based participatory research, and/or health literacy required
- Must have a strong interest and experience in community-based research and working with at-risk and diverse communities
- Interest in translational science and working with a multidisciplinary team of scientists required
- Data management and statistical analytic skills required
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including record of peer-review publications and scholarly presentations required
- Strong track record in cooperative work required
- Creative, independent, and highly motivated, with the ability to interact professionally in both research and community environments required
- Strong work habits and the ability to work independently and with diverse groups required

Preferred:
- Experience working in rural populations preferred
- Experience working with youth programs preferred
- Experience working on federally funded research trials preferred
- Registered Dietitian preferred

Notes:
- This position will require frequent in-state travel.
- Occasional overnight travel will be required.
- The initial appointment is for 1 year, with 2 years of additional funding available, contingent on performance.
- The position is available immediately, but a start date is negotiable. ABD will be considered.
