Virus isolation from clinical samples, sequencing of virus isolates, and characterization of virus replication and cloning of virus genes are focused around surveillance efforts during the influenza season. The position also involves the expression, purification and characterization of viral proteins which will be used in a variety of immunological assays to assess influenza vaccine-induced immune responses. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-laboratory team focused on understanding influenza virus infection and the evasion of vaccine-induced immune responses.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities The primary duties and responsibilities involve research on clinical influenza virus strains. Organize research projects involving the characterization of clinical isolates of influenza virus. Characterize influenza virus infection in standard cell cultures as well as in primary respiratory epithelial cell cultures. Express and characterize viral proteins for use in research on vaccine efficacy. Participate in multi-disciplinary research projects involving multiple groups. Supervise and train new laboratory members. Keep accurate, detailed laboratory records. Additional responsibilities will be to aid the principal investigator in the writing of monthly, semi-annual and annual research progress reports; maintain and update procedures; protocols and approvals for work with laboratory material; prepare presentations and summaries of experiments; aid in the preparation of manuscripts and grant submissions.

Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
